Holiferm Limited develops processes for manufacturing biosurfactants using natural ingredients using sustainable and environmentally friendly methods. It began as a spin from the University of Manchester, where co-founder and CEO developed the initial process, a fermentation with integrated gravity separation technology for producing sophorolipids, as part of his PhD studies. Holiferm’s mission is to facilitate the manufacture of holistically sustainable bioproducts at a value point at which they are affordable to everyone and therefore eliminate the need for petrochemicals. Since 2018 the company has grown to comprise 50 employees across two sites; an R&D facility in Manchester and a pilot and commercial plant in Liverpool, which produces circa 1.1kta with plans to scale up to 3kta. The company recently announced a JDA with Sasol to continue developing processes for the manufacture of rhamnolipids and MELs, with the aim to bring these to market in 2024.
